The PizzaMonsters Return: Community Taps + Pizza (82/Gateway Blvd)

Urbano Pizza Logo

After an extended break (mostly down to our friend Covid), the PizzaMonsters are back to again show you the very best in Edmonton pizza!

Join us as we visit a new addition to the city as of March 2022, Community Taps + Pizza. Located just north of the major intersection of Gateway Blvd and Whyte Ave, and just south of the Strathcona Farmer's Market, Community is presented as a fun and funky restaurant & bar with local craft beer and a solid pizza menu.

Will it make a welcome addition to YEG, and more importantly, how will it compare to the other YEG Pizza reviews from the PizzaMonsters?

Community is easy to find, though parking could be tricky in the busy times, unless you are down for pay parking.

Perched above El Cortez, there are a few stairs to climb but once there you see there's a sunny patio out back, and a healthy amount of seats in this fairly large pizzeria which is family friendly with a lounge feel, and has a great atmosphere.

Community Taps + Pizza Exterior

It felt great to be back out and about, and we were getting pretty excited waiting for our pizza, and checking out the traffic and people watching out of the big windows to the city below.

Community Taps + Pizza Interior

Community is beautifully decorated with a beautiful bar, retro furniture, and fun patio-style lighting that really all comes together well. The tunes were lively, lighting was spot on, and everyone was smiling. There was no Feature Pizza the night we dropped in, but they often have something special and off-menu for you to try.

There was, however, a feature Brewery of The Month! This month's being Town Square Brewing from right here in Edmonton with a dollar from each pint donated to local charity, The Mustard Seed.

Community Taps + Pizza Signage

I tried the Town Square Pilsner, which grew on me as I made it down the glass, and Kingston had a craft Root Beer from Annex which he really enjoyed and said was like no other Root Beer.

Community offers a choice of New York style OR Detroit style deep dish. We opted for the New York style, and in typical PizzaMonsters fashion, made sure we went for extra sauce!

The Place: 5 -There were lots of details like lots of little lights and wallpaper.

The Crust: 5 - The New York style was thin and crispy and then the chew in your mouth.

The Sauce: 4 - Lots of sauce but needed more flavor.

The Cheese: 5 - The cheese was great and stringy.

The Toppings: 5 - Lots of toppings and a big range of toppings too.

PizzaMonsters Verdict: 5 The pizza was really good and I want to go back and have it again soon!

The Place: 4.5 - A welcome addition to the community and just a nice place to be.

The Crust: 4 - Thin, but not ridiculously so, the New York style crust had a crisp bite to it which led to a very satisfying chew. Very solid crust.

The Sauce: 3.5 - Again, glad we opted for the extra sauce. Not a bold sauce, and everything balanced really well, but was looking for a bit more pop here.

The Cheese: 4 - Delicious and stringy with just the right amount. Everywhere it needed to be.

The Toppings: 4 - The Spicy Sausage toppings, while delicious and accompanying each other well, certainly couldn't be labeled as spicy. Maybe a warmer pepper than the serrano would do the trick?

PizzaMonsters Verdict: 4 Already on my revisit list, a few other of the pizzas sounded quite delish as well as having a whole other pizza type to try, and next time a seat out on the patio is needed as they were full this time around with it being such a hot day. Well done Community, the PizzaMonsters will be back!
