Back to the Crust: Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria (Whyte Ave)

Campus Pizza Logo

It was after a visit to Famoso together that the Pizzamonsters first came up with the very idea to be Pizzamonsters, and so after visiting some of Edmonton's favourite pizza joints on the hunt for YEG's best pie, we decided to return to where it all started...

Famoso is located right in the heart of Whyte Ave, in (if i remember correctly) what used to be a Le Chateau in a previous life. It has a pretty good atmosphere inside and while well-decorated, still gives off an easy-going vibe.

Famoso Exterior

The staff were quick and friendly, and the place was decently full for a Friday evening keeping the large stone pizza oven full and busy. I wouldn't say it's the most family friendly place as compared to some we've been to, (despite the great kids meal option) and it showed as the other clientele were mainly young couples or groups in their 20's.

Campus Pizza Interior

We settled in with a 'Boozy Lemonade' and a Cranberry Juice, and the Pizzamonsters carefully and hungrily selected their prey for the evening. There's a bit of an old school feel here with the old stone oven and the fact that they import their tomatoes from the spiritual home of pizza itself, Italy. (Did you know Italy didn't have tomatoes until they were brought over from the New World in the 16th Century!)

The Grub

1x 7" Abruzzo Pizza (Oven-roasted Italian sausage, red onions, roasted mushrooms, fennel seeds, smoked mozzarella)

1x Kids Meal (Margherita Pizza, Cranberry Juice, Gelato)

1x 'Boozy Lemonade'

The Place: 2.5 - It's ok, kinda grown up in here though.

The Crust: 4 - Super good crust! Chewy chewy.

The Sauce: 4 - It could be the best sauce and there's lots!

The Cheese: 4 - The white cheese is stringy and fun to eat.

The Toppings: 3.5 - I guess it's just Basil with the sauce and cheese, so it's good.

The Drink: 3 - The Cranberry Juice was pretty good, i think next time i want to try an italian soda!

PizzaMonsters Verdict: 3.5 Yeah, the crust was super good and really, all of it was good, like the sauce for sure. I like the pizza more than the place. The whole kids meal (especially the ice cream!) was really good.

The Place: 3.5 - It has a 'good feel', staff were friendly, place is clean. Can't help but feel it's missing...something.

The Crust: 4.5 - Top crust. Chewy, crispy, tasty.... hard to beat i think.

The Sauce: 4 - A very fresh tasting sauce, very tomato-y. Again, could use a little more... big surprise.

The Cheese: 3 - Decent cheese, decent portions. Room for improvement

The Toppings: 3.5 - The sausage was a bit mild for my tastes, and the onion looked like an afterthought, but not a bad overall taste.

The Drink: 4 - The Boozy Lemonade hit the spot and was refreshing on a hot summer day.

PizzaMonsters Verdict: 3.5 Quality crust, tasty sauce, average cheese. Famoso hits the mark on some things, misses on others. Though I do feel perhaps another topping combination could improve things as the basics were well taken care of. Mmm.. that crust.
