A Pizza Mystery: Dallas Pizza (106 Ave)

Nitza's Pizza Logo

So after doing some digging around online after some of the lesser known Pizza Joints around Edmonton, the PizzaMonsters stumbled upon Dallas Pizza which is nestled away in the Forest Heights neighbourhood.

We hadn't heard of it before, and while we get recommendations from readers sometimes, Dallas Pizza had flown under the radar so far. Mystery pizza? The PizzaMonsters had to check it out! Reviews online were varied about the service and location, but reports on the actual pizza itself were almost all very positive. So we geared up in our PizzaMonster shirts and headed in to solve the mystery...

Dallas Pizza Exterior

Dallas Pizza is located on 106 ave, just east of Gretzky Drive and south of Rowland Rd. in a small strip mall on the corner of 79 St. The restaurant itself is dated with very little atmosphere... in fact it feels like the last time any one had fun in here was around the last time the place was renovated. And that was probably before the Oilers moved to Edmonton.

Dallas Pizza Interior

It seems like a family run sort of operation, and seemed very legitimate as we could hear Italian being spoken by both staff and guests. (Probably a good sign!) Our server was friendly enough and the place was about half full for dinnertime Friday. Kids get a menu to colour while you wait for your pizza, which we hoped would be as good as promised. Kingston decided on a Pepperoni, Bacon & Italian Sausage combination for us which sounded great... and so we got busy with the crayolas.

The Place: 3 - They should change the place. The colouring menu was fun though.

The Crust: 4.5 - Probably one of my favourites!

The Sauce: 4 - I like the sauce, and i like that there is lots too.

The Cheese: 4 - Stringy, gooey, smooshy, yummy.

The Toppings: 4 - The bacon was sooo good and there was lots of all the toppings.

PizzaMonsters Verdict: 4 It was really good pizza AND it was cut in to squares not triangles which is the first place ever to do that!

The Place: 2.5 - Well, it's somewhere between dingy and rustic. Closer to dingy.

The Crust: 4 - It's not super deep like Chicago Style Deep Dish, it's not Royal Pizza deep dish either, but it's got some depth to it. Shallow deep? Good flavour, good crunch, good chew.

The Sauce: 3.5 - Good sauce coverage, and while it has a bite, it doesn't overpower the rest of the flavours.

The Cheese: 3.5 - Lots of coverage again, but (at least when hot) doesn't have a lot of flavour to it.

The Toppings: 4 - The cut up strips of real bacon were fantastic, the pepperoni had a great spicy taste, while the sausage was the standard crumbled italian fare.

The Leftovers: 4.5 - Probably the best next-day pizza I've come across. The crust stayed together well, and somehow cold, the cheese tasted way better!

PizzaMonsters Verdict: 3.5 Too bad about the dinge and sometimes poor service (judging both from the online reviews and the overall atmosphere of the place) because they really do pump out a solid pizza offering, especially if you're a cold pizza lover. Take-out/delivery perhaps?
